CDS alumna Doris Ann Shover Brucker '47 honored her parents by including the school in her estate plan, which will provide future students with exciting, far reaching educational experiences which in turn will enrich and inspire future generations.
A Gift of Gratitude
Doris Ann Shover Brucker '47 CDS is full of life and energy.
She adheres to the motto, love to live; live to love. She is extremely grateful to her alma mater, Grosse Pointe Country Day School (CDS) for setting the foundation for her lifelong learning and imparting the excitement of new discoveries.
Doris Ann started at CDS in third grade when her family relocated from Philadelphia to Grosse Pointe as her father, Bertram P. Shover, accepted the role of Head of the Middle School. Mr. Shover served as the Head of the Middle School and then Head of the Lower School for over thirty years.
During much of this time her mother, Ruth A. Shover, served as a substitute teacher in the Lower School. Doris Ann’s sister, Barbara Shover Scherer, also attended CDS and graduated from Grosse Pointe University School (GPUS) in 1956.
In addition to enjoying the role that CDS played in the life of her family, Doris Ann made some of the closest friends and found some of her most meaningful mentors at the school. She still keeps in touch with classmates on a regular basis and remembers her teachers and coaches fondly.
Some CDS faculty members in particular have greatly influenced her life. Her English teacher, Dorothy Arms, inspired her lifelong interest in literature and writing. Her Art teacher, Miss Gaines, introduced her to various art media and theories of art. Doris Ann remembers vividly Country Day’s Art Room, located on the third floor. Today she has a studio in her house, which she calls the “Art Room”.
A middle school teacher and coach at CDS, Margaret Butch Lewis, a graduate of Wellesley College, was the mentor and role model who inspired Doris Ann to choose and graduated from Wellesley where she studied English and Art History. Doris Ann Shover married Wilber M. Brucker, Jr. only ten days after graduating from Wellesley.
They were great partners for fifty- two years, had three children, all of whom graduated from University Liggett School: Barbara “Bobbie” Brucker Triggs ’71, Wilber “Bill” Brucker III ’74 and Paul “Brad” Brucker ’79- Doris Ann now has four grandchildren.
Throughout the years, Doris Ann has been actively involved with University Liggett School, as the Vice President of the Alumni Association, a member of the Board of Trustees and as an active member of the Parents’ Association.
Today Doris Ann remains serious about art. She enjoys painting with acrylics on canvas and watercolors. She finds inspiration from nature, as well as from her photographs and abstract images. She has remained physically and intellectually active.
At CDS she played field hockey, lacrosse, softball, basketball and danced on the school lawn every May Day. Today she plays tennis and swims regularly. To her delight she has traveled around the world with her husband and now on her own visiting museums and art galleries, viewing the art works she studied in college.
In her community and state, she held assignments under Governors Romney and Milliken, worked extensively with the Junior League of Detroit, Friends of the Grosse Pointe Library, Grosse Pointe Farms and Garden Club, the Hilberry Theatre at Wayne State University where she has been involved since its 1964 inception.
She is a Stephen Minister and active at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church for over fifty years as an elder, trustee and council member.
She has volunteered Gallery Services at the Detroit Institute of Art for the past twelve years. We at University Liggett School are proud that Doris Ann credits her foundational development to Grosse Pointe Country Day School.
