The Performing Arts at Liggett

Music
Liggett is fortunate to have vocal and instrumental teachers who are regionally prominent music performers, arrangers, and composers in their own right. From primary school through grade 12, Liggett students have myriad opportunities to sing and to participate in instrumental music. Instrumental offerings include strings starting in grade 3 and band instruments starting in grade  six. From the Lower School choir – which annually performs at numerous community events – to the Middle School band and chorus, to the Upper School chorale, advanced chorale and instrumental music ensembles, the joyous sounds of music ring throughout our campus. Each year, Middle and Upper School students earn local and state honors in vocal and instrumental music.

Theater
Each year, Middle and Upper School drama students present two theatrical productions ranging from popular Broadway musicals to tense dramas. The Liggett Players have been recognized at the state and national level for excellence in high school theater. The students are involved in every aspect of the productions, both on stage and behind the scenes. Lower School students enjoy after-school drama instructional programs and participate in a variety of assemblies throughout the year, where they can cut their dramatic and artistic teeth. The Upper School also regularly produces an all-school musical which engages students from each division.

Visual Arts
Each division has its own visual arts teacher, imparting age-appropriate education in visual and creative arts. In addition to regular course offerings in visual art, Liggett offers an artist-in-residence program. Working associations with professional artists illuminate the creative process for students and teachers, from ceramic artists to photographers to filmmakers and more. Visiting artists make formal presentations, work informally at their artform, and give instruction and critiques. The Manoogian Arts Wing Gallery has regular exhibitions of professional or student work, and throughout the year, students have additional opportunities to display their work.

Arts Wing
Dedicated in 1996, the Manoogian Arts Wing is the center of the Creative and Performing Arts program at University Liggett School, housing faculty offices, a recital hall, music rooms, art rooms and a photography studio. There is space for student art displays, as well as for receptions and community activities.

The Anderson Exhibition Center, dedicated in honor of Wendell W. Anderson, Jr., ’42 (DUS), hosts the visiting artists gallery. At least four times each year, the work of visiting artists is mounted in the gallery, which is open for public viewing during school hours. Student art work also is mounted in the gallery throughout the year.
