Lower School

Advancing CRITCIAL THINKING Since 1878

Diving below the surface of questions and proposing challenging questions is the cornerstone of our Lower School.

Teachers balance wild curiosity and inventiveness within the thoughtful sequence of our curriculum. Developing literacy, numeracy and research skills allows students to learn independently and collaboratively while they pursue projects that harness focus and critical thinking to bring their big ideas to life.

With the elbowroom to apply ideas and test theories, active learners and adaptable thinkers are immersed in an educational journey.

Orchestra

Beginning in third grade, students are introduced to a comprehensive strings program and start on either violin, viola or cello.

Math

At Liggett, our students are taught to critically think — and Singapore Math allows students to master math concepts, rather than memorize them. Class time is spent working with math manipulatives, which reinforce concepts and ensure that every student understands the material on a deeper level.

Physical Education

Physical education is an essential part of a child’s well-being — physically, emotionally and academically. Studies show that physical activity improves academic performance and concentration. At Liggett, students have physical education every day beginning in first grade.

Orff Music

Liggett’s music education program employs the Orff Schulwerk philosophy — an approach that integrates music, movement, speech and drama.

Technology

Liggett’s curriculum integrates technology, empowering students to use technology to plan and conduct research, solve problems and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Technology is used for global classroom exchanges with peer schools around the world, and students are taught to be global citizens — someone whose actions contribute to building this community both online and off.

Ice Skating

During the winter months, Lower School students have ice skating on a regular basis as part of their PE classes. The school also offers open skate for families on Sundays during the late fall and winter.

Extended Day Care and After-School Enrichment

Extended day care is available mornings and evenings. In addition, a variety of learning enrichment classes are offered throughout the year after school, including coding, golf, Lego, field hockey, Latin, Spanish and French, yoga and ukulele.

Lunch is Included

Liggett’s tuition includes lunch.
