University Liggett School student honored by the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce

University Liggett School senior Spencer Lukas was honored by the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce at the Pointer of Distinction awards ceremony in January. Lukas was honored with the Youth Achievement Award and a $1,000 scholarship. Elizabeth Jamett, director of college guidance at University Liggett School, nominated him.

“Since his early school days, Spencer exhibited a unique set of interpersonal skills. Our former head of school referred to Spencer as ‘the mayor,’ because he was known to students of all grade-levels,” she said in her nomination letter.

“Moreover, Spencer exhibits an interest in others that is truly genuine.”

His extracurricular activities include varsity ice hockey team manager, varsity golf team captain, athletic council member, student commission historian and Spirit yearbook editor-in-chief and special projects coordinator and broadcaster for "The Cube.”

Outside of school, Lukas works as a caddy and golf services staff member at Lochmoor Club. He has served as assistant coach at Total Golf Adventures since 2015. He has been a volunteer with Kids on the Go since 2013 and said one of his proudest moments occurred with Kids on the Go.

“I helped coach a baseball game on one of my first days of camp. After a camper hit a ball between the outfielders, I ran to him and enthusiastically asked for a high five to acknowledge his achievement. He responded quickly, 'High five? I want a hug, Coach Spencer!' I hugged him and, in retrospect, it was a great moment. Although this interaction seemed ordinary at the time, my mother received a call that evening from the camp director. She explained that the child was usually withdrawn and unable to make connections with others. The director thought the camper's display of emotion was really noteworthy, and that made me feel very proud,” he said.

Each year though the Youth Achievement Award, the Chamber recognizes three high school students who live in Grosse Pointe who excel academically and participate in extra-curricular activities and volunteer their time in the community.
