At ULS, athletics and wellness are integral to the educational experience. Our students learn what it takes to compete in organized sports, how to prioritize health and wellness, and why physical fitness is key to a balanced lifestyle.

Guided by dedicated mentors, they engage in ways that foster personal growth, promote a love of play, and build character. From elite athletes and team leaders to statisticians and equipment managers, our student-led programming gives students of every age a chance to shine.

Upper School Athletics: Rising to the Competition

Upper School Athletics at ULS encourages broad engagement, boasts numerous championship wins, and is backed by a vibrant fan base. Facing some of the state's most competitive schools prepares our athletes to play at the highest levels. Participation in two-three co-curricular seasons is required for graduation, integrating athletics into the student experience. Through their involvement, students learn essential skills such as time management, self-advocacy, health and wellness, teamwork, balance, and taking care of their bodies.

The Upper School offers 20 varsity sports and five junior varsity sports, with 75% of students participating on at least one team.

Middle School Athletics: Exploring Passions and Play
Middle School athletics at ULS builds on the sports-focused PE curriculum from the Lower School, offering even more opportunities for students to experiment with various sports and develop a passion for physical activity.

Middle School Athletics: Building Skills, Character, and Confidence
Through an array of offerings, our program emphasizes exposure, skill-building, teamwork, and preparation for Upper School, with highly engaged and expert coaches - many of whom also teach - ensuring that every student is developed. In these safe, yet, highly competitive environments, students learn adaptability, respect, empathy, character development, and time management.

Middle School Athletics: Competing with Purpose
Our Middle School athletic teams compete against both Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) member schools and other public, private, and independent schools in Metro Detroit.

Lower School Athletics: A Foundation for an Active Life

Our Lower School program is a skills-based curriculum designed to expose students to various sports and body movements, fostering engagement through play.

Developing Key Athletic Skills

Students practice essential athletic skills such as ice skating, kicking, throwing, catching, and striking, with a focus on year-to-year progression. Emphasizing skill development, mental health, and physical activity, our program prepares students for future athletic endeavors.

Expanding Skills and Opportunities

As fifth graders develop a greater focus on sports, their curriculum aligns with Middle School athletic seasons. Each year, we assess their interest in participating in Middle School athletics and organized sports. Our cross-divisional “Skills and Drills” program introduces fundamental skills, with Middle School coaches leading and Upper School students assisting.

Early Childhood: Building the Foundations of Play and Wellness

The Early Childhood program at ULS involves regular participation in PE classes, weekly yoga, and daily outdoor play that exposes students to connection, stamina, strength, and sunshine. With a focus on developing fundamental locomotor and manipulative skills, young students explore movement, coordination, balance, and basic athletic abilities in a safe and supportive environment. Emphasis is placed on fostering interpersonal skills, such as teamwork and communication, through engaging activities. This early exposure to physical education and play lays the foundation for a lifelong appreciation of wellness and physical activity that prepares students for more structured athletic programs in the future — and for healthy, joyful living.
