Inspired by Reggio Emilia: A Student-Centered Journey

EARLY CHILDHOOD

Merging the renowned Reggio Emilia philosophy and our innovative Liggett Approach, learning is deeply student-centered. Placing students at the heart of their own educational journey starts with teachers who take the time to know every student well. Each classroom is led by two co-teachers who are experts in child development, giving them the flexibility to carefully observe children interacting in a range of settings from one-on-one interactions to small group activities.

What is Reggio Emilia?

EARLY CHILDHOOD

The Reggio Emilia philosophy is an innovative, child-centered approach to education that views children as capable, curious, and active participants in their learning journey.

At its core, the Reggio Emilia approach fosters a deep respect for children’s ideas and encourages them to express themselves through a wide range of mediums, from art to spoken language. It prioritizes collaboration among children and between teachers, families, and the community. Teachers observe and listen to children carefully, guiding them through projects and activities that spark curiosity and critical thinking.

In a Reggio-inspired classroom, the environment itself is considered the "third teacher," with thoughtfully designed spaces that inspire exploration and creativity. A hallmark of the philosophy is its emphasis on documentation, which guides instruction, makes learning visible, and encourages reflection.

This approach empowers children to develop interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, confidence, a strong academic foundation, and a deep sense of belonging — all while exploring topics that inspire and engage them. By nurturing both academic growth and essential life skills, the Reggio Emilia philosophy prepares children to navigate the world with curiosity, confidence, and purpose. At University Liggett School, we blend this philosophy with our Liggett Approach to create a dynamic and enriching educational experience that unlocks each child’s potential and fosters a lifelong love of learning.

Building Strong Connections with Students and Families

EC Parent

Being in close communication with families, teachers come to know their students beyond the classroom, cultivating a deep understanding of their unique strengths and needs. As a result, they craft experiences that appropriately challenge each students’ individual development.

Cultivating Joy, Curiosity, and Growth

 Child celebrates teacher

Classrooms are intimate settings that spark joy and wonder where children are encouraged to lean into their curiosity, consider different viewpoints, take risks, and explore their world in a safe and supportive environment. While foundational literacy and math skills are integrated and ever-present, teachers adjust their methods and materials based on student interests and needs. Going beyond academics, this approach fosters agency, confidence, and interpersonal skills that are vital to their future success.

Beyond the Classroom

At University Liggett School, learning extends far beyond traditional academics. Activities like art, music, yoga, and other engaging experiences enrich the Early Childhood program, fostering creativity, self-expression, and overall well-being. These opportunities help young learners grow holistically while discovering new passions and talents.
