Boys' tennis is the most successful program in University Liggett School history, boasting an impressive 38 State Championships since 1933. In 2021, the team secured the Regional Championship for the ninth consecutive year and finished as State Runner-Up. The previous year, in 2020, they claimed the Regional Championship for the eighth year in a row.
The program has produced numerous individual State Champions, with one of the most recent being William Cooksey ('21), who won four consecutive individual State Championships from 2017 to 2020.
In 2022, the team reached the pinnacle of success once again, capturing the State Championship. This legacy of excellence continues to define the Boys' Tennis program, showcasing both the skill and determination of its athletes.

Mark Sobieralski Coach Mark Sobieralski, inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2017, brings nearly 40 years of coaching experience to University Liggett School. Throughout his career, he has led his teams to six State Championships, including two for ULS’ boys’ tennis team. Mark has earned widespread recognition at both the state and national levels, receiving eight Coach of the Year awards. His impact extends beyond coaching, as he has contributed to the sport of tennis itself. He has served on the Michigan High School Tennis Association Board of Directors, was President of the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association, and founded the Macomb County Coaches Association. A lifelong advocate for tennis, Coach Sobieralski is committed to instilling honesty, sportsmanship, and a competitive spirit in his athletes. He ensures his teams are not only well-coached but also develop a deep respect for the game and their opponents, fostering values that extend far beyond the court. |
