Boys' tennis is the most successful program in University Liggett School history, boasting an impressive 60 State Championships since 1933.

The boys’ tennis program continues to uphold a legacy of excellence and championship success. Most recently, the Knights captured the Division 4 State Title in Midland after earning another Regional Championship. The team also brought home state titles in four individual categories:

Justin Platt – 4 Singles
Niko Cooksey & Griffin Marchal – 1 Doubles
Landen Maltby & Charlie Laethem – 2 Doubles
Rene Quint & Lucas Ferguson – 3 Doubles

Over the past several seasons, the Knights have consistently ranked among the top programs in the state. They claimed the State Championship in 2022, finished as State Runner-Up in 2021, and have produced numerous individual State Champions, including William Cooksey ('21), who won four consecutive individual titles.

The Knights’ continued success reflects the dedication, skill, and competitive spirit that define the Boys’ Tennis program.

Mark Sobieralski email Coach Mark Sobieralski, inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2017, brings nearly 40 years of coaching experience to University Liggett School. Throughout his career, he has led his teams to six State Championships, including two for ULS’ boys’ tennis team. Mark has earned widespread recognition at both the state and national levels, receiving eight Coach of the Year awards. His impact extends beyond coaching, as he has contributed to the sport of tennis itself. He has served on the Michigan High School Tennis Association Board of Directors, was President of the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association, and founded the Macomb County Coaches Association. A lifelong advocate for tennis, Coach Sobieralski is committed to instilling honesty, sportsmanship, and a competitive spirit in his athletes. He ensures his teams are not only well-coached but also develop a deep respect for the game and their opponents, fostering values that extend far beyond the court.
